EMC Data Protection – Always in Style for VCE

Chandra Jacobs
I love creative and challenging projects in the emerging technology product space. I have a background in tech, innovation, and product development, especially as applied to web and mobile apps in the entrepreneurship arena, but have recently moved into marketing. In my role as a product marketer, I have gravitated toward digital marketing as well as analytics/data mining. It fits well with my techie geek bent as well as my cloud angle on The Backup Window. (Be sure to catch my posts on Innovation Station too!) Outside of work at EMC, I enjoy exploring Boston’s culinary and jazz scene (often in combination), and travel as much as I can (35 countries and counting).

With Cisco Live Europe 2014 picking up steam in Milan, a city known for fine fashion and hi-tech (and at times fashiontech), it’s exciting to be talking about the perfect accessory to the VCE Vblock System – the VCE Data Protection Solution, built from EMC Data Protection and Availability technology. I’m no fashion aficionado, but I do know this: nothing goes better with a converged infrastructure than a matching (integrated and optimized) Data Protection solution.

EMC DATA PROTECTION IS ALWAYS IN STYLE.

Milan Hi-Fashion

You’ll never have to worry that your data protection

doesn’t match your Vblock System.

Welcome to the yellow brick road of virtualization and convergence. You have begun the journey of data center transformation to combat the challenges of data growth, spiraling costs, and complexity. You will continue to have to buy more, expensive backup storage to keep pace, while losing a handle on your backup windows, leaving critical data at risk. By integrating and optimizing data protection into your converged infrastructure, you can tame the multi-headed beast of data growth, not only in your primary environment, but in your data protection environment too.

Hydra

But you’re not done yet. You may think you have tamed the beast of data growth through convergence. The problem with data growth is that it’s a multi-headed hydra – even if you’ve addressed data growth in your primary infrastructure, you will still be dealing with it in your data protection environment unless you think differently.

“But how do I go about this?” I’m glad you asked. The first thing to do is to put on your ruby red shoes (always in fashion, whatever the season), click your heels together and say – “There’s no Data Protection like EMC” – three times over. The next (and last thing) you will ever have to do is let VCE walk you further down the “virtual” yellow brick road – because VCE can bake in EMC Data Protection with every order of ooey-gooey, converged goodness. Data Protection that’s pre-integrated, pre-tested, and pre-configured – optimized to protect your new investment, worry free.

towards virtualization

VCE Data Protection offers a 3-tiered Data Protection continuum, starting with a strong foundation of backup and recovery. EMC Backup and Recovery software and hardware are optimized for a virtualized, converged environment like VCE. Leveraging efficient deduplication technology, you’ll be able to reduce the time it takes to complete your backups by 90%, sending only changed data across the network to the backup appliance. Not only will you conserve network bandwidth by 99%, but you’re also offloading you backup data from your primary network by implementing a VCE Backup solution. In the end, you’ll see a reduction in backup storage by 10-30x, saving you money while you become master and commander in an ocean of explosive data growth. Finally, with tight integration to VMware vSphere, you’ll be able to not only backup, but also recover, your data and business critical applications – fast. 30x faster than the competition with Changed Block Tracking.

For added Data Protection, VCE offers flexible recovery points with continuous data protection through cross-site replication – this is leveraging EMC RecoverPoint. And, if your environment requires zero data loss and downtime, you can move up the Data Protection continuum and add EMC VPLEX for workload mobility and data availability in the event of an outage.

EMC Data Protection software and hardware offered by VCE are purpose-built to work together and carefully chosen to optimize your converged infrastructure investment. When you purchase your Vblock System, include EMC Data Protection solutions upfront so that you can get a handle on backup data growth once and for all. Don’t just be reactively fashionable – be a pro-active fashion trend-setter with VCE and EMC.

Data Protection – Getting Dressed Up for Cisco Live Milan

As a product marketing lead based in Guildford, Surrey, I'm often seen presenting to EMC’s partners and end users at various events across Europe. I have over 20 years experience in the storage market, largely gained in the financial and legal sectors, including PaineWebber, part of UBS, and Clifford Chance, the international legal practice, where I was the storage manager for a number of years. But I've also held had product marketing stints at Quantum and previously at EMC. I'm married with two children and live in Guildford, Surrey.

Milan, famous for many things, but perhaps the most talked about is its position as a major world fashion and design capital…and of course acting as the host city to Cisco Live Europe 2014.

So it was suggested that our EMC booth staff should dress the part. Top designers were sought for this special assignment, many designs were inspected, and below you can see an example of just one of the finalists modeled by a collection of EMC System Engineer’s.

Milan Hi-Fashion

While we’re telling you now that we *might* have new shirts for the new season of events, you’ll have to wait until the show to hear what’s new with Data Protection and Availability at EMC.

Our EMC Booth (D1), located at the front of the Solution Hall, will be hard not to miss. Starting at 10:30am each day from Tuesday 28th Jan – Thursday 30th Jan we will have dedicated Data Protection and Availability staff available to help you with all your questions.

You can also catch our team presenting on two adjacent booths; Intel and VCE both will feature dedicated presentations on how Data Protection from EMC forms an integral part of joint solution offerings. Hear from our team in the VCE booth at 12:15 each day and at 11:30am each day in the Intel booth. What will you learn? Well I don’t want to spoil the announcement but it will involve a major upgrade from our side of the house, allowing you to meet your backup windows and speed up your recovery process in a converged infrastructure.

We must not forget our activity with Cisco – catch our joint presentation in the Main Hall at 11:30am on Thursday. We will be discussing how you can transform your data centre with EMC VSPEX and Cisco Technology. This will be followed by an online webcast at 15:00 CET where those of you not at the show can listen to Karl Connolly from EMC discuss a similar topic (Go Karl, Go Karl, it’s your birthday, have a party – we can hardly wait!).

Did someone say P-A-R-T-Y? Why yes – Cisco Live would not be the same without a party! You will have to stop by the EMC Booth on Tuesday and Wednesday to get your ticket to the party on Wednesday night. However it’s first come, first serve with a strict limit on the numbers.

As ever we’ll be covering all of these events on social media so follow us on Twitter @EMCBackup for all the latest updates and news, and tweet to us and let us know how we’re doing!…oh and look out to see if we changed our shirts. ;)

EMC Booth at VMworld Barcelona

It was Barcelona’s turn to host this year’s VMworld Europe conference. Thousands of attendees descended upon this beautiful city for a week of VM education. For EMCBackup it was a particularly relevant show, as we discussed in our previous blog. On Day 1, VMware announced updates to vSphere Data Protection Advanced 5.5 (VDP Advanced 5.5). The updates included some major benefits for existing EMCBackup customers, who are now able to replicate their backups to an EMC Avamar grid or choose to use a local EMC Data Domain system to consolidate all of the backups from a number of virtual VDP appliances. You can read more about the why VDP Advanced 5.5 is better with Avamar and Data Domain together here.

To be expected, there was a massive amount of social activity about these new features, therefore I have decided to summarise a selection of this activity into a Storify Blog which you can read here.

See you next year!

The Path to the Cloud Includes Backup

Mark Doncov

Mark Doncov

I’ve spent most of the seven years I’ve been at EMC on backup. Currently, I work on category and solution marketing initiatives in EMC’s Backup Recovery Systems division. In short, this means I focus on the “why” for EMC Backup, not the “what”; I leave the bits and bytes to the product teams. Over the years, I’ve seen big changes in the backup world. I will be looking at these – and the even bigger ones that lie ahead - here on The Backup Window and other social channels.

As VMworld 2013 nears to a close, your head is probably spinning with new knowledge about the cloud and cloud infrastructures. How could it not, right?

And, hopefully, you’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the EMC cloud story, the three paths we offer—build your own, VSPEX and VCE Vblock Systems— and why backup is vital to all three.

3 paths to the cloud

If you deploy cloud infrastructure without thinking about backup, you’ll face some unwanted challenges. Not only is traditional backup struggling under the pressures of data growth but virtualization is stressing it too.

Left unchanged, backup can have a domino effect with your organization: Data owners (e.g., the storage, VM and app owners), seeing the old backup ways are breaking down even faster than before, will find solutions on their own. Soon, you’ll have protection silos and an “accidental” backup architecture for your new cloud environment. That means cost, complexity and risk—and that’s just what you’re working to eliminate! Forget about business acceleration.

A better approach is to address protection at the start. Because backup is built into both Vblock Systems and  VSPEX, your organization gets the performance and visibility it needs IT-wide. This eliminates silos and accidental architectures, and it will allow you to scale efficiently and simply as you grow.

So as you consider your next cloud moves, don’t forget backup. If you go with one of EMC’s three paths, you won’t.  Best of all, with EMC you’ll be able to defy one of the most common conventions in IT today– broken backup.
